The Civil Division has jurisdiction over any civil action or action in equity (excluding family matters) brought in the District of Columbia, except where jurisdiction is exclusively vested in the Federal Court. The Office of the Director is responsible for the overall management of all branches within the Civil Division.

The Civil Actions Branch has jurisdiction over civil actions for more than $10,000 in damages brought in the District of Columbia, except where the federal court has exclusive jurisdiction. The Civil Actions Branch is commonly referred to as the Civil Clerk's Office.

The Landlord and Tenant Branch handles all actions for the possession of real property.

The Small Claims and Conciliation Branch oversees the processing and adjudication of cases where the amount in controversy is $10,000 or less.

The Housing Conditions Calendar allows tenants to sue landlords for DC Housing Code violations on an expedited basis.

Saturdays:
9:00 a.m. to 12 noon (for filings only)

Wednesdays:
6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (protective order payments only)

Filings can be made in the after-hours filing box in the lobby of the Moultrie Courthouse.
